The course difficulty ultimately depends on the weather and conditions they’ll face, but there’s no question that the route will take riders to some of the most spectacular locations in the country. It’s longer, more remote, and there are significant stretches where riders are above 3,300 meters in elevation. This year’s course is said to be the longest and hardest yet. The race starts tomorrow, August 12th, with a midnight grand depart from Karakol. Anything is possible in the Tian Shan Mountains. In previous years, riders have faced heavy rain, freezing temperatures, gale-force winds, and snow. The Silk Road Mountain Race is a 1,880-kilometer unsupported race through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan using a route made up of gravel, doubletrack, and old Soviet roads that have long been forgotten and fallen into disrepair. One of the most anticipated events in the world of ultra-distance bikepacking is back for 2023, and we’re excited to follow along once again. ![]()
